Two Earthquakes, One Date.. Uncanny coincidence?

-

October 10th carries a strange echo in seismic history.
On this date, six years apart, two devastating earthquakes struck two distant nations: Algeria in 1980 and El Salvador in 1986, leaving behind destruction, grief, and a coincidence that still feels unsettling in the historical record.

October 10, 1980
On the afternoon of October 10, 1980, the city of El Asnam (modern‑day Chlef) was hit by one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded in North Africa.
The quake registered 7.1–7.3 Mw, with an intensity reaching MMI X (Extreme). Entire districts collapsed within seconds.

Deaths: between 2,633 and 5,000

Injured: more than 9,000

Homeless: over 300,000

Buildings destroyed: approximately 25,000

The earthquake ruptured the ground along a major fault line, lifting sections of land by several meters. It reshaped the region physically and psychologically, becoming a defining national tragedy for Algeria.

October 10, 1986
Exactly six years later, on October 10, 1986, the earth shook again — this time beneath San Salvador.
The quake measured 5.7 Mw, smaller in magnitude but devastating due to its shallow depth and the vulnerability of the city’s infrastructure.

Deaths: between 1,000 and 1,500

Injured: more than 10,000–20,000

Homeless: around 200,000

Worst damage: hospitals, markets, and densely populated neighborhoods

The capital’s historic center suffered catastrophic collapse. Rescue efforts lasted days as aftershocks continued to rattle the city.

Although facts tell us that faults rupture when geological stress reaches its breaking point, not because a date repeats. Yet the coincidence remains striking:

  • Both quakes occurred on October 10.
  • Both caused mass casualties.
  • Both struck major population centers.
  • Both became defining national disasters.
  • Both triggered major reconstruction and policy reforms.

Two nations, two continents, two tragedies — bound by a single date.

For sure, October 10th is not cursed, but rather remembered, however, many cannot help feeling that the coincidence feels uncanny.
